Battle of Britain ceremony held in Cold Lake

The 83rd Anniversary of the Battle of Britain ceremony took place on Sept. 17 at the Cold Lake Legion cenotaph.

COLD LAKE - The 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Britain ceremony took place on Sept. 17 at the Cold Lake Legion cenotaph on 10th Street.

A parade lead by the 4 Wing Band was held, while those in attendance also heard a brief history of the Battle of Britain, where more than 2,300 airmen flew between July and October, 1940, of which 100 were Canadian.

Over 100 people were in attendance on Sept. 17. They listened to the 4 Wing Band play the national anthem, and a commemorative service by Padre Young. Speeches followed by 4 Wing Commander Colonel David Turenne and a reading of the poem, "High Flight" took place.

The 4 Wing Pipes and Drums played Piper's Lament, and the 4 Wing Band played Last Post and Reveille. The ceremony ended with the laying of the wreaths, the 4 Wing Band playing God Save the Queen, and a flyby of the CF-188 Hornets.
