COLD LAKE - The City of Cold Lake will be lending its support to this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations, hosted by Cold Lake First Nations at Casino Dene on June 20, 2025.
During its May 13 regular council meeting, City Council approved a $2,250 grant to help cover the rental and supply costs for 1,000 chairs and 70 tables to accommodate public seating at the event.
The funding will come from the City’s Council Goodwill account.
The request for support was brought forward at the April 22 council meeting by Shawna Janvier of Cold Lake First Nations, during a formal delegation.
CAO Kevin Nagoya reminded council members of the presentation, noting, “this was a delegation at your last meeting. Shawna Janvier presented for some support from the City of Cold Lake to provide tables and chairs at their annual Indigenous Day event.”
Nagoya also provided background on the event’s location, noting this year it will be held in the area of the casino and Hotel Dene.
He went on to highlight the increase in scale of this year’s celebration. “There's an increased amount of tables and chairs. So, the number went up there for council for consideration is 1,000 chairs and 70 tables. The cost to be able to set up and take down for the event is about $2,250.”
Council voted unanimously to approve the grant to assist with the logistics of the event, which is expected to draw a large crowd from the region in celebration of Indigenous culture, heritage, and community.
