COLD LAKE - Cold Lake is gearing up for its annual Snow Fever festival, set to take place over the Family Day long weekend.

From Feb.15 to 17, Kinosoo Ridge, the Cold Lake Energy Centre, and 4 Wing will each host a list of winter events and activities for people of all ages.

While the event at Kinosoo Ridge requires admission to the ski hill, events at the Energy Centre and 4 Wing are free for the community to enjoy.

“This year’s Snow Fever will see a new addition to the event, the cardboard sled races. We have created a sled hill where participants will race to the finish line,” said Katie Pankhurst, community events programmer for the City of Cold Lake.

The race will take place on Feb.16, at the Thomas Varughese Field, with prizes awarded for the farthest, fastest, and most creative sleds, said Pankhurst.

“The staff have been hard at work building the ice rink on the turf field, and it will be open for use during the event,” Pankhurst explained.

Families can also look forward to ice sculptures nearby. “The ice carvers will be on-site early next week to begin building our ice slides, ice games, and this year we are going to have a large throne for the public to snap a picture on.”

Attendees will find no shortage of activities at the Cold Lake Energy Centre on Sunday.

“In addition to the skating and ice games, we will have axe throwing, Lakeland Golf 2 Go, sparkle tattoos, Olaf roving around, and a large fire pit to warm up next to,” said Pankhurst. “Another new addition this year is the snow dig box, where kids will be able to dig up frozen ‘eggs’ which hold a surprise inside.”

Pankhurst added, “Snow Fever is an important event for the community as it helps bring people from all walks of life together to enjoy the festivities. It also establishes a connection between our residents to help build a strong sense of pride for the community. Our events help shape memorable moments for the city and our residents.”
