LAKELAND - The City of Cold Lake and the MD of Bonnyville are teaming up for a special event to support cancer-affected families in the Lakeland region.
On Jan. 31, from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., the 86Cancer Charity Hockey Game will take place at Imperial Oil Place in the Cold Lake Energy Centre, featuring a friendly yet competitive shootout showdown between Reeve Barry Kalinski and Mayor Craig Copeland.
The 86Cancer Charity Hockey Game has raised more than $20,000 over the past three years for the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic. Funding supports families dealing with cancer. This year’s event aims to build on past success with an evening of hockey and community spirit, according to information from a joint media release from the MD of Bonnyville and City of Cold Lake.
The challenge, issued during the Jan. 14 MD of Bonnyville council meeting, will see the reeve and mayor face off during the game’s intermission. The municipal leader who scores the fewest goals will wear a shirt bearing the winner’s municipal logo at a future council meeting.
“This is for a really great cause. Cancer touches so many lives in our area, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on this charity hockey game,” said Kalinski.
Copeland echoed the sentiment, stating, “By challenging each other, we can also challenge our communities to come out and pack the seats at the charity hockey game. Regardless of who wins, it’s sure to be a spectacular event for a great cause.”
Tickets to the game are $10 each, with children under five admitted free. Tickets are available for purchase at Cold Lake Brewing and Distilling, Sylvestre’s Source for Sports in Bonnyville, Sunshine Game & Hobby in St. Paul, and at the door on the night of the game.
