COLD LAKE - The City of Cold Lake will be taking part in this year's Communities in Bloom competition and residents and businesses are being encouraged to do their part before judges arrive.

Communities in Bloom (CiB) is a national initiative that rates communities in a variety of areas, such as environmental sustainability, the enhancements of green spaces, and heritage conservation in cultural and natural environments.

According to information from CiB, Cold Lake will be taking part in the Up to 20,000 Population category alongside Chipman, New Brunswick, Provost, Alberta, and Wolseley, Saskatchewan.

The community will be rated from one to five 'Blooms,' based on the scoring. Also, the community will aim to obtain bronze, silver or gold levels in their five-bloom rating, according to CiB.

Judges Susan Ellis from Pembroke, Ont., and Tina Liu from Ottawa, Ont., will be evaluating Cold Lake on Aug. 1, 2 and 3.

Businesses and residents are encouraged to tidy up their property before the judges arrive.

National and International results will be announced in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, Alta., from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1, during the National Symposium on Parks & Grounds and the National & International Awards celebrating "Northern Blooms."

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit volunteer and partnership-driven organization that uses competitive evaluation process "to foster community strength, involvement, and continuous improvement."

According to CiB, "Our vision is to inspire all communities to enhance the quality of life and our environment through people and plants to create community pride. 'Growing Great Places Together' is our slogan, and it captures the essence of the program."
