COLD LAKE - The Cold Lake and District FCSS hosted its annual Fill a Bus Christmas Hamper project at Cold Lake Sobeys, running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m on Nov. 30. The long-standing event, put together in partnership with the Cold Lake Food Bank, brought together dozens of volunteers and donors to gather food and monetary donations to support local families in need.
“This event has been going on for many years now. I've been with FCSS for 13 and it pre-dates me. So, it's a long-standing event. It's a partnership between the Cold Lake Food Bank and our host, Cold Lake Sobeys, who are always such gracious hosts,” said Leanne Draper, volunteer services coordinator with Cold Lake and District FCSS.
The Fill a Bus initiative is one of the most popular volunteer opportunities hosted by FCSS.
“The volunteer roster filled within two and a half days this year because everybody wants to be part of this . . . It’s so much fun. It’s a great way to get yourself in the holiday spirit.”
Volunteers worked in shifts throughout the day, with an estimated 60 individuals participating in two-hour rotations.
Generosity flowed from the community as donors filled the bus with essential items.
“Every item goes directly to the Cold Lake Food Bank,” Draper shared.
She highlighted the most needed items, such as “soup, crackers, beans and sauce, which is really popular, kid-friendly food like cereals, pudding cups, [and] fruit in a cup.”
She added, the event is important for two reasons – the funds and items raised directly help those in need, and the event also helps create awareness.
Draper shared touching stories, showcasing the community’s giving spirit.
“I’ve had people show up every year with an overflowing cart, and they just walk away. They go, here you go. They don’t want any recognition.”
Others donate specific items that hold personal significance.
“I’ve had people tell me that they’ll buy something special . . . because when they were a kid they didn’t have those treats. So, they’re empathetic to the people receiving the treats.”
The spirit of volunteerism was equally inspiring. From hockey players to college students, the event draws a diverse group of volunteers.
“I just want to thank all the volunteers. The new ones, this is their first time, and my volunteers who have been here faithfully every year, no matter how cold it is, they’re out there every year helping us. I want to thank the generous donors. I want to thank Sobeys for being amazing hosts, always so gracious to us.”
