First Valentine's Day salsa night takes place at 4 Wing MFRCS

On Feb. 14, 4 Wing Military Family Resource Centre Society (MFRCS) held their first Valentine Day Salsa Date Night.

COLD LAKE - On Feb. 14, 4 Wing Military Family Resource Centre Society (MFRCS) held their first Valentine Day Salsa Date Night.

Over 30 people attended the free event.

Janelle Bernier, operations support, said the event celebrated love and helped people learn a fun, new skill, while spending time with others.

"A lot of military members are away now, so some people brought their friends," said Bernier.

As people arrived, they could pick a flower to put in their hair, and enjoy a glass of sparkling juice. The hall was decorated by plants from the 4 Wing greenhouse and included a Valentine photobooth with props.

Over the course of two hours, teachers Scarlet Munoz and Thomas Garbe taught several basic steps and turns that ended with a combination called the Titanic. As people danced during the practices, the instructors went around and helped individuals and couples. Munoz explained salsa dancing helps partners get closer together as they feel the beat and move to the rhythms.

"It's a sensual Latin dance," said Munoz.

Attendees enjoyed refreshments from the chocolate fountain table and went home with flowers, chocolates and pink popcorn.
