COLD LAKE - Every second Saturday, the Harbour Alliance Church in Cold Lake transforms into a cozy hive of creativity as members of the Kinosoo Quilt Guild gather with sewing machines, fabric, and friendship in tow.

Founded in memory of a local quilter who passed away, the guild began under the name "The Last Stitch Quilt Guild" before eventually becoming the Kinosoo Quilt Guild. While the name changed, the mission has remained constant: building community and sharing the art of quilting.

“Our mission statement is to promote the craft of quilting,” said Connie Hawkridge, president of the guild. “They’re always willing to share their secrets. Nobody gatekeeps.”

With about 35 members, skill levels range from beginners to seasoned quilting veterans. Hawkridge herself only took up quilting four or five years ago but was welcomed instantly.

“When I first wanted to join... I was a little shy,” she recalled. “And when we got there, it was just, ‘Well, welcome.’ And like I said, I don't know anything. And they just pick you up and take you along for the ride.”

Their twice-monthly "Sew Saturdays" are informal gatherings where members bring their own machines or hand-stitching projects and sometimes even snacks to share. Beyond the sound of stitching and the hum of machines, there’s the comforting buzz of conversation.

“Quilting can be a very solitary thing if you're sitting at home quilting by yourself,” Hawkridge said. “So, it's nice to have a social outlet.”

The guild also holds quilting retreats twice a year, one local, often at Riverhurst Hall, and one out-of-town in Westlock, where members spend three days immersed in their craft, learning from one another in a relaxed and encouraging setting.

“We just sew for three days straight,” said Hawkridge. “It's amazing... a really, really encouraging atmosphere.”

Beyond fostering creativity, the guild is committed to giving back. Members create lap quilts for local seniors in long-term care or at facilities like Points West Living and Cold Lake Lodge. Each quilt is thoughtfully designed with hand pockets and tailored to residents’ needs.

“We make all these quilts, and then we just have them sitting and waiting,” Hawkridge explained. “Then we'll say take them to the lodge, or Points West, or long-term care… we kind of keep our ears open as to what needs to be donated.”

Many Cold Lake residents have spotted the handmade quilts in use at senior facilities, often providing comfort to loved ones and reinforcing the guild’s presence in the community.

Every two years, the guild also hosts a quilt show, showcasing a variety of quilting styles including embroidery, appliqué, modern, and traditional quilting.

“Everybody has their own little passion for quilting, the type of quilting that they like to do,” said Hawkridge.

The Kinosoo Quilt Guild welcomes anyone with an interest in quilting, regardless of experience. Those interested can find the guild through word of mouth or on social media, where the group maintains both public and members-only pages.

“Just show up. None of us bite,” Hawkridge joked. “We love our craft, and we want to share our craft.”

Membership includes an annual fee, and new quilters are encouraged to seek advice from experienced members on what to buy and what to avoid.
