COLD LAKE – A traffic stop conducted by the Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit (LCRU) resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

Members from the LCRU were conducting patrols on Jan. 6 in the area of 50th Ave. and 53rd St. in Cold Lake when they observed a white Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck driving dangerously in the area.

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver, who was known to police, was arrested and taken into custody.

Upon further investigation, RCMP discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen during a break and enter that occurred at a local business in Bonnyville on Nov. 6, 2020. Police also discovered that the vehicle had been given a false vehicle identification number plate in an attempt to hide that it was a stolen vehicle.

There were also two children in the truck at the time of the suspect's arrest.

Jarrid Desjarlais-Janvier, 26, of Elizabeth Métis Settlement was charged with two counts of operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of crime obtained by crime under $5,000, failure to comply with a probation order, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, among others.

Desjarlais-Janvier was held for a bail hearing where he was released by a justice of the peace on a $250 cash deposit release order. He’s scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court on Feb. 24.
