COLD LAKE — Engines roared and dirt flew as the Canadian Triple Crown Series brought high-octane energy to Cold Lake on June 7 and 8, transforming the Mason Watt Memorial Raceway into a battleground of speed and skill.
Hosted by the Cold Lake Motocross Association, the two-day event was part of Canada’s largest motocross series and a major stop in Jetwerx’s national tour.
“We got a pro national. We go across the country and race from BC all the way out to New Brunswick and we stopped here at Cold Lake to have our own national and it's been awesome so far. We've been excited to be here,” said COO Kyle Thompson of Jetwerx and the Triple Crown Series.
June 7 saw around 250 amateur riders, men, women, youth, and seasoned weekend warriors, competing for fun and experience. Sunday brought the heat with top pro riders from across Canada, the U.S., and beyond, battling it out for championship points, trophies, and cash prizes.
“It's a track that is probably the biggest track on the series, honestly. It's amongst the hills here and lots of good riders coming out here to try this out,” Thompson said.
The Cold Lake stop became reality after local organizers reached out, and according to Thompson, it’s one of the most promising venues in the entire circuit.
“I'm hoping we can build off this event. I want to see this event come back for years to come and have it in this area. I really enjoy being in this city,” he said. “I think if the city can get behind it, I think this could be a staple in our series, and make it so we come here each year and bring thousands of people to the community.”
Motocross, Thompson added, is a unique sport that brings people together.
“It's a family sport where everybody comes out as a group and a family. And we're all racing in the same spot, unlike soccer and baseball where you're in different age groups.”
