'Northern Grizzly' exercise set to take place this week at CFB Cold Lake

Residents in Cold Lake may noticed an increase in CH-146 Griffon flights from 417 Combat Support Squadron as exercise "Northern Grizzly," takes place at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake, Jan. 26 to 28.

COLD LAKE - Residents in Cold Lake may notice an increase in CH-146 Griffon flights from 417 Combat Support Squadron as exercise "Northern Grizzly" takes place at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake, later this week.

Exercise "Northern Grizzly" will run from Jan. 26 to  28. 

"Training flights will most often take place in the training areas of CFB Cold Lake during daylight hours," according to information from 4 Wing Cold Lake's acting public affairs officer Tammy Bright Burden.

"Northern Grizzly" is a winter exercise "geared towards a force protection, in the event of a fire or other event requiring force protection," according to information from 4 Wing Cold Lake.

The CH-146 Griffon helicopter conducts base rescue for the fighter units, casualty evacuation, along with training and search and rescue operations.

According to information from the federal government, 4 Wing Cold Lake is the busiest fighter base in Canada. The base provides "general purpose, multi-role, combat capable forces in support of domestic and international roles of Canada's Air Force."
