Annual Easter dinner takes place at Portage College

The dinner is hosted each year by Lord of Glory Lutheran Church and is for Portage College students and their families.

LAC LA BICHE - For close to three decades, Lord of Glory Lutheran Church in Lac La Biche has hosted its annual Easter dinner for Portage College students and their families.

On March 20, from 5-7 p.m. a large group of people gathered at the Voyageur Grill for this evening of food and fellowship.

The free meal got underway with prayers in both English and Cree. Members of the congregation worked with Portage College staff to cook the dinner, which consisted of turkey, dressing, vegetables, gravy, and stuffing. Lord of Glory also provided and served a variety of sweets for the dinner, which were on a long table for all to enjoy. The Rotary Club of Lac La Biche helped pay for the turkeys.

Julie Hink, a deaconess with Lord of Glory Lutheran Church, said the Portage College dinner traditionally takes place as an Easter dinner during Holy Week. However, she added, for this year, because students will be heading back home for the Easter break, organizers decided to host the event a week earlier to make it more convenient for them.

“This year the timing is much better for the students this week, before Holy Week, so we adjusted for them,” Hink told Lakeland This Week.
