LAC LA BICHE - Santa came to town for a few hours on Saturday as part of the annual Lac La Biche Firefighters' Society Santa’s Helpers hamper program toy and food drive, known as ‘Santa’s Coming to Town.’ The event took place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the old Lac La Biche fire hall as well as on Main Street near the corner of 101st Street where a handful members of Lac La Biche County Fire Rescue conducted a boot drive.
The local firefighters stood in the middle of the street collecting donations from passing motorists, which were placed into the firefighter bunker gear boots they held. The donations will go to buying toys and food vouchers for families in need this Christmas season.
Inside the old fire hall, members of the 2995 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps served hot dogs and hot chocolate to those who stopped. Several players from the Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team were also present at the event talking with people and even playing a few fun games of ball hockey.
While kids had a chance to write letters to Santa which then mailed directly to the North Pole by the local Canada Post office, they could also simply tell him themselves what they wanted for Christmas as he was there for the entire event. Throughout the late morning and afternoon, people also dropped off toy donations that were collected by volunteers.
