Big Dock soon to be history

The Big Dock sitting in a bay on Lac La Biche may soon be just a memory, now that it belongs to Lac La Biche County.

The dock was owned by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and is at the centre of plans to revitalize the Lac La Biche waterfront. Plans have been drawn up with several options for the waterfront, but until the sale of the dock went through the plans couldn’t be acted on.

Now, with the sale of the dock, plans can move ahead, with the first step being the Big Dock committee presenting the various plans to the public in efforts to narrow down the selection.

A timeline for tearing out the current dock and replacing it with something else has not yet been set.

While some residents will be glad to see the crumbling structure go, at least one resident will be looking for a new home. Currently, the elbow of the dock is home to a beaver, who has built a lodge against the dock, and before freeze-up could occasionally be seen swiiming in the bay, or doing some landscaping on the shore. So far, council has yet to make a decision on the fate of the furry resident.
