Baseball gloves and boxing gloves have come together for this year's Pow Wow Days slo-pitch tournament for a unique combination.
A partnership with the Lac La Biche Boxing Club will see local slowpitch teams squaring off to make a bit hit on the ball diamonds over the Pow Wow Days weekend. This year's Pow Wow Days will take place from July 11 to 14. The tournament will be played 12 - 14.
"Pow Wow Days is very important to out community members and visitors alike. The Boxing Club is happy to partner with the Pow Wow Days Association," said Jeremy Trimble, the president of the local boxing club. He said the club members have decided to get in the ring to help with a one-two punch of community spirit and regional pride that will hopefully lead to more local agencies getting involved with the community's big summer event. "It is important for community groups to assist with the annual event to build community pride and spirit."
Pow Wow Association event coordinator Catlin Benson said the return of the Pow Wow slo-pitch tournament — will help draw more people to the recreation grounds.
"The 2019 Pow Wow board is pleased to announce the addition of a slo-pitch tournament to this year's event," he told the POST. "We are fortunate to have the Lac La Biche Boxing Club partner with us to assist in managing the event."
The tournament is slated to take over diamonds one and 2 at the Lac La Biche Recreation Grounds over the weekend. Benson said the focus is to have 12 local teams in the tournament, competing for cash prizes
"There will be some great money prizes," said Trimble, explaining that with a full 12-team schedule, the winning team will take $1,000. The second place team will win $800.
