The Plamondon and Lac La Biche taekwondo clubs recently raised more than $6,000 for the local women’s shelter.
The two clubs raised the money as part of their second annual Break for Hope fundraiser. Last year, members raised $5,661 for Hope Haven Women’s Shelter, and this year, they beat that amount, raising $6,237.
Hope Haven is very grateful for the clubs’ efforts, said Ann Half, the executive assistant at the shelter.
“That’s awesome,” Half said. “It’s simply amazing, I’m blown away.”
The money will go toward funding programs at the shelter, especially programs and toys for children who also stay at Hope Haven, said Cassie Putnam, the executive director of the shelter.
After collecting pledges for a few weeks, the two clubs put on an event at the Agricom to show what the taekwondo members can do. With bare hands, they broke wooden boards and cement bricks. Instructors explained that these feats take a lot of practice, involving both physical and mental discipline.
