Cruisin' for Christmas focuses on helping local food banks

RCMP and Peace Officers help JAWS students raise food and funds

LAC LA BICHE - On Dec. 20, students and staff from Lac La Biche's  J.A. Williams High School (JAWS)  hosted the annual “JAWS Cruisin’ for Christmas Fundraiser” at Britton’s Independent Grocer.

For six and a half hours, from 12:30 p.m. - 7 p.m., students filled RCMP and Lac La Biche County Enforcement Services vehicles with food donated by grocery store customers. Students worked at the grocery store tills through the afternoon, bagging groceries and moving donated items to the police cars. Customers could also make dollar donations to the event.

The food and funding donations went to help the Portage College food bank, the Out of the Elements Shelter, and JAWS Student Services. The cruisers were available to assist in transporting the food donations.

At the same time  as the Cruisin' event, JAWS Community Helpers and members of the school’s Interact Club were hosting a hot-chocolate and popcorn fundraiser for grocery store shoppers.

In keeping with the Christmas theme of giving, Lyric Jesso, a Grade 12 student at JAWS and the 2023 Junior Citizen of the Year, played Christmas music on the piano in the store during the event.
