Cutting and pasting a new club into the library's schedule

Decorative cutting, trimming, cornering, pasting and lettering were among some of the things people found at the first meeting of the new scrapbooking club beginning Nov. 5 at the Stuart McPherson Library at the Bold Center.

The connection between the popular craft and the new library was a cut and paste relationship as well. When Tanya Kirylchuk bumped into library board chairperson Loraine Anderton at the recent library grand opening, a new page was created.

“I had been asking [Loraine] if the library could use any scrap-booking supplies, because I’ve been doing it for so long I have a lot of excess,” Kirylchuk said. “She happened to mention that the library was looking into starting a club and I thought, ‘Well I can do that’.”

Kirylchuk has been scrapbooking for over 12 years and recently started doing card making as well. She thought it would be a great idea to have a scrapbooking club at the library, especially during the winter months.

“Most people do a lot of scrap-booking in the winter because it gives people something fun to do,” Kirylchuk noted. “Because we do a lot of farming, it’s easier for me to help start this program from November to April over the winter months.”

The first meeting of the new club will focus on making festive scrapbooks and cards for the upcoming holiday season. The library will be providing some of the supplies needed and Kirylchuk, who had planned on donating excess materials anyways, will provide some craft supplies as well.

“It’s a free club and basic supplies will be provided, but people can bring their own too,” said Maureen Penn, director of library services.

“We hope to see a lot of people come out and have regular members on a monthly basis,” said Penn. “ It’s a great way to socialize.”

Penn hopes to introduce a few new clubs in the upcoming months as well, such as a LEGO club. The hopes are that the clubs can coincide so that the kids can go to the LEGO club while the parents can go to the scrapbooking club.

The minimum age for the scrapbooking club is 13, simply so that everyone who attends can properly use the tools provided. The scheduled time for the monthly meetings is at 1p.m. on the first Saturday of every month.
