Getting set for Valentine's Day: Love is in the hair

Lac La Biche salons say Valentine's Day is a busy occasion

LAC LA BICHE - Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and while it may be the most romantic date on the calendar — with couples showering each other with affection, flowers, and yummy chocolates — it’s also a day that sees people giving themselves a little makeover present.

Yasmeen Abougouche, the owner of Jazzy’s Salon and Boutique in Lac La Biche, says every year around Valentine's Day, her salon is a busy place with many ladies from the area coming in wanting their hair “freshened up” and ready for date night.

And while they are sitting in chairs being tended to by the local hairstylist, quite a few of these ladies start talking about Valentine’s Day and what kinds of gifts they would like to receive. Some of these gifts, she continued, are purchased in the salon’s boutique section.

“After all these conversations, the ladies will go into our boutique section and pick out a few pieces of jewelry or perfume for their partners to come purchase after,” Abougouche said, adding that while her salon doesn’t specifically do men’s hair, the significant others will often come in and shop for their partners.

With regards to the most popular hairstyles when it comes to Valentines, Abougouche said a lot of her customers purchase hair extensions.

“On Valentine’s Day ladies with extensions or even without will come to get their hair washed and curl their hair for the evening,” she said.

Feeling better

Down the street at Boheme House of Beauty, owner Erin Boychuk also sees an influx of clients around Valentine’s Day. She said salon staff speak with clients beforehand if they are wanting their next appointment to line up just before Valentine’s Day or if they just want to come in for a blowout or style for the occasion.

“Lots of people like to feel refreshed for any holiday, and Valentines is no exception,” Boychuk stated.
