Hylo more than tripled its population for one day last weekend — the community’s annual quad rally drew in more than 500 riders last Saturday.

The sunny, warm weather played a part in the amazing turnout, but Wade Juknies, one of the organizers, says that it’s also the track that always attracts people. The 74-kilometre trail takes riders over mixed terrain and around four lakes.

“It gives you a chance to get to see the country in a way you don’t normally get to see it,” Juknies said. “Essentially, it’s all off-road.”

For those who may not be up for completing the entire trek — which takes around five hours — there was a shortcut shaving off 15 kilometres, but still let riders hit all the checkpoints in their chance to win some of the dozens of prizes.

The timing of the rally is another attractive factor. It’s the first rally in the area in the year, and it gives riders a good blend of warm weather and the fun remnants of winter — driving over ice and some leftover snow.

“It’s a good compromise,” Juknies said. “It’s not too early, it’s not too late.”
