On June 26, Community Futures, the Lac La Biche and District Chamber of Commerce, Alberta HUB, the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta is hosting an EARN (Employee Attraction and Retention Network) event called Trust the Process: Building a Better Workplace.

Kevin Burns is the guest speaker at the fourth EARN event hosted in Lac La Biche. He is a management consultant who works with small business owners, middle managers, front-line supervisor and the people they work with to teach about different strategies to improve communication in the workplace.

"The success or failure of any organization can be boiled down to one of two things: the people you hire and how you manage those people,” said Burns, adding that Lac La Biche is poised to face challenges in those two areas. "Add a hot economy on top of that, like it is in Lac La Biche, and that creates a lot of challenges: finding and recruiting good people, training them properly, managing them very well and then ultimately, hanging on to them.”

Burns says that his presentation at the EARN luncheon is going to help employers in the Lac La Biche area improve on those points and give them the opportunity to learn as much as they can.

"I want to help. I will be speaking specifically to small business leadership skills, which can lead to an improved ability to attract, manage and retain good people,” he said. "I will be offering 10 key strategies in building leadership attitude that will sustain business owners and managers through the challenging times of managing, recruiting, hiring and retaining in a hot market.”

Maurice Brousseau, one of the organizers of the event says the event will be especially relevant in the Lac La Biche area because there is a demand for what Burns will be speaking about.

"I think that in our area, and Lac La Biche County in general, is looking to attract employees,” he said. You can see that there is a demand for folks to migrate here and to find people to employ and come to Lac La Biche, so that is what this [luncheon] is – to help companies combat the need for employees, figure out why they lose them to other companies, why they get drawn out of our region and so on.”

The luncheon, featuring speaker Kevin Burns, takes place on June 26 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., and will include a lunch for those that attend. Admission to the two-hour event is $20.00.

If you are interested in attending the luncheon, contact Lac La Biche Community Futures at 780-623-2662 for last minute tickets.
