Lac La Biche Heritage Society hosts floor curling tourney

The event featured 18 teams from the Lac La Biche area and the Lakeland region

LAC LA BICHE - The month of March was swept away with the help of local seniors competing in a northeastern Alberta mixed floor curling event at Lac La Biche Heritage Society.

The end of the month event featured 72 players on 18  teams from Lac La Biche, Plamondon, Bonnyville, Ardmore, St. Paul and across the region.

There was no playoff format, and the team with the highest number of points after playing three games was awarded the first-place cash prize of $100. The second and third place winners received $80 and $60.

According to Les Diachinsky, the president of the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, many communities in the region take turns hosting events, giving the senior teams some travel and playing time throughout the season. He added that members of the Lac La Biche club will be heading to Fort Kent in early April to participate in a mixed open tournament.

Diachinsky said the annual floor curling competition brings old friends and family members from the across the region together for a day of fun and socializing.

“It’s a huge social event,” he told Lakeland This Week.
