Lac La Biche hosts 2024 ACAC Futsal championships

Keyano win men's title, SAIT earns women's top spot

LAC LA BICHE - The Keyano College Huskies are the 2024 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) men’s Futsal champs and the SAIT Trojans are ACAC champs on the women’s side. Both teams were crowned after a weekend of play at Lac La Biche’s Bold Center.

The Portage College Voyageurs futsal teams hosted the championships that saw the top men and women’s teams from the north and south ACAC division battle for the 2024 title. Teams competing were from Keyano College, Lakeland College, Medicine Hat College, Olds College, Ambrose College, NAIT, Lethbridge College and SAIT

On Sunday afternoon, in the final men’s gold game of the three-day, end of season tournament, Keyano beat Medicine Hat 5-3. In the bronze medal match, the Olds College Broncos defeated the Ambrose University Lions 11-2.

In the women’s final, SAIT defeated the Lethbridge Kodiaks 1-0 to take the gold.

The Keyano College Huskies women were the winners of the bronze game, blanking the NAIT Ooks 6-0.

Although the Voyageur men’s team didn’t make it to the playoffs, they earned an entry to the championships as the event hosts. The Portage women’s team didn’t put a team into the championships.

The Voyageurs played the first of their three games on the weekend with a Friday night game, beating the eventual bronze-medal winning Old College Broncos. It was the only win for Portage on the weekend, losing a Saturday game to Keyano 4-0, and a back-and-forth tilt with Ambrose that ended in a 4-3 loss that took an overtime period to decide.
