This past week, Lac La Biche RCMP officers were called down to southern Alberta to help out with efforts to organize residents of areas affected by the severe flooding that has left the Calgary area in ruins over the last few days.

"Basically, we are going to help man road blocks and assist with emergency evacuations," said Lac La Biche RCMP Const. Chris Clark.

The officer heading to the south end of the province believe that it is important to remain available to administer assistance where ever it is necessary and to help the overwhelmed emergency responders already working hard to make sure everyone is in a safe place.

"It's important to help them because their emergency responders have been working non-stop with no rest," said Clark. "We are going in to help them get a much needed break, but also to help keep the public safe and assist with evacuations."

Clark also wants to assure the public that patrols in Lac La Biche will not be affected while a number of officers from our local detachment make the trip.

"There will be guys in on overtime," he said, adding that Lac La Biche resident safety is still number one on their priority list.

The flooding that has overtaken the Calgary area began with rain and hail and has since seen rivers overflowing and taking over the city and the surrounding area. As of June 23, the RCMP has confirmed three casualties directly related to the flooding.
