Lac La Biche senior actively involved in the community

Paul Shaw, a retired nurse, helps out with the cooking crew at the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, and also plays music at his church, for residents of seniors' lodges, and a kids' program at the Stuart MacPherson Public Library in Lac La Biche.

LAC LA BICHE – Like many seniors, Paul Shaw is very active in his community. He volunteers his time and talents with several community organizations, including his church, the Lac La Biche Heritage Society, and the local library.

As a senior, Shaw believes it is important to stay active, lend a helping hand to those who need it, and make his community a better place. He also enjoys working alongside other volunteers.

“Things need to be done, and they can’t all be paid positions,” he acknowledges.

Throughout the year, Shaw, who is a retired nurse, helps with the cooking crew at the Lac La Biche Heritage Society. The dedicated volunteer is also a musician and can be seen around town with his guitar singing and playing music for the kids’ Bible club at the Evangelical Free Church, on stage at the seasonal Lac La Biche Farmers’ Market, as well as at the Stuart MacPherson Public Library.

Shaw is involved in a weekly kids’ library program called Rhyme Tyme, which is done in conjunction with Lac La Biche County FCSS.

“It’s for little children. So, I basically play music . . . greatest hits like ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and other things like that. They call me Poppa Paul,” he says, with a smile.

Shaw’s love of playing music has also taken him to other places around Lac La Biche, including performing for residents of seniors’ facilities.

“I also show up at the lodge at Golden Sands . . . and play music for them too,” he says.

Shaws volunteer efforts have been acknowledged and celebrated in the community. During the 2023 edition of Lac La Biche Summer Days, Shaw received an award at a special celebration.

“That was a big surprise . . . I accepted it on behalf of all of the volunteers that I worked with,” says Shaw.

Alberta Seniors Week, which runs from June 2 to 8, provides an opportunity to recognize the many seniors who remain involved in their communities.

“It’s a thank-you or acknowledgement of the impact that their activities provide for the community,” says Shaw.
