LAC LA BICHE – People using the outdoor sports courts at Lac La Biche’s Bold Centre will have some protection from the wind and elements thanks to a windbreak that was made possible through funding from the Rotary Club of Lac La Biche.
Tim Polzin, president of the Rotary Club, says the organization coordinated with Lac La Biche County for the initiative.
The Rotary Club agreed that in return for providing the municipality with financial support to purchase the windbreak, the club would get the benefit of having naming rights to the facility. The courts provide a venue for activities such as basketball, pickleball, and tennis.
“The windbreak will allow people to be able to play when there is still a bit of wind,” Polzin said, adding, it also gives a little bit of colour to the surroundings.
On June 3, Polzin, along with members of the Lac La Biche Rotary Club and Staci Lattimer, the recreation and culture manager for Lac La Biche County, gathered in front of the windbreaks bearing the name of the service organization.
“We’re part of the community . . . We want to be able to provide support to the County, and to all the people in the area,” said Polzin.
The windbreak on the outdoor sports courts is one of several projects in the Lac La Biche community that the Rotary Club has been helping with.
Other initiatives include the exercise courts by the spray park in Lac La Biche’s McArthur Park, the gazebo next to McArthur Place, as well as another gazebo at Lacalta Lodge. The Rotary Club has also sponsored some of the activities at JA Williams (JAWS) High School in Lac La Biche.
For Lac La Biche County, the municipality is always happy to get support from local groups.
“We’re always blessed and happy with all the continued support and sponsorship for our different rec facilities,” Lattimer said.
