A Lac La Biche man Gained a new appreciation for laundry maintenance as a Tide of firefighters Bounced into his Dumasfield home last Thursday morning to put out a dryer fire.

The dryer fire started not long after the homeowner cleaned out the lint trap after using the machine. About 10 minutes later, the man smelled rubber burning and headed downstairs to see the older dryer on fire.

Lac La Biche firefighters were called to the home by an alarm monitoring company last Thursday morning. The man had already put out the fire when firefighters arrived on the scene and luckily no damage was done to the home.

“If it hadn’t of been for the alarm company, there was a good chance the whole house would have caught fire,” said Brad Semeniuk, a local firefighter and Fire Prevention Officer with the Lac La Biche County, adding that the basement had an open beam ceiling and if the fire had spread, it would have caused substantial damage to the home. The fire had already charred the vent piping leading from the dryer up to the basement ceiling. “There were signs that the fire had already started to creep up the metal tube.” Semeniuk recommends that homeowners install a smoke alarm in every second room, especially in the utility room.
