Lifestyle habits get a boost at Lac La Biche workshop

Need a change? This might be for you

LAC LA BICHE - Train Your Brain for Habit Change is a wellness workshop that takes place at the Bold Centre on Oct. 25 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Deborah Menard a personal fitness trainer and community outreach worker with Lac La Biche County FCSS, said the workshop is designed to teach people how to build and develop positive habits to change behaviours in their lives.

“The habit-building process is about having the right mindset and replacing bad habits with new, healthier habits,” she said, explaining that the key to people making significant changes in their lives doesn’t necessarily mean revolutionizing their behaviour or reinventing themselves. Rather, they can make tiny changes to their behaviours which, when done repeatedly, will become habits that can lead to significant results. “It's about training your identity - who do you want to be? 'I am' statements will train your brain to behave in the intention of who you are.”

Stacking up

One of the methods that will be taught during the workshop is habit-stacking, which is used to introduce new behaviours. As Menard explains, building new habits requires cues that are easy to grasp and understand, as well as a plan of action.

“People are motivated by the anticipation of reward, so making habits attractive will help them stick to it,” she said. “Habits need to be as easy as possible to adopt, reducing the friction and barriers that make it difficult.”

This workshop will be held again Jan. 24, 6:30-7:30 p.m. People can still register for the Oct. 25 workshop by contacting the Bold Centre at 780-623-3829 or online: https://boldcenter.ca/activellbc/.
