The rider of a motorcycle that sideswiped a tractor trailer unit on the Old Mission Road on Friday, August 3  suffered only minor injuries.

Lac La BIche RCMP say the 64-year old rider of a late model Yamaha motorcycle was southbound on the Old Mission Road near the airport when a semi turned into his path from an intersection. The 2 pm. collision bounced the motorcycle and its rider off the side of the big truck and into the west-side ditch where the rider was thrown over the handlebars.

Police say at the time of the collision the motorcycle was travelling at around 50 km/h.

The motorcycle did take on some damage, but was able to be ridden to the owner's home. The motorcycle rider and the truck driver both came to the RCMP detachment to report the incident.

There was no word on charges.

The motorcycle crash began a busy long weekend for local Mounties.  Lac La Biche RCMP Staff Sgt. Charles Brown said there were 57 files created in the three-day weekend to start the month. Of the files, 15 were tickets for speeding vehicles.

Brown said the uptick in motorists in the area over the August long weekend accounted for the increase in files.

"There was a lot of people out on the roads — some moving faster than they should," he said, adding that other files included assaults, uttering threats and incidents involving intoxicated people.

Despite the busy long weekend, the detachment's boss says the number of incidents so far this summer is down from last year.

"Overall, our summer call volume is down," he said.
