UPDATE: Motorcycle rider killed near Smoky Lake

Motorcycle collides with guard rail near bridge crossing.

A 46-year old Fort McMurray woman has been killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 831 south of Waskatenau.

Police say the crash took place on the north side of the bridge over the North Saskatchewan River about 10 kilometres south of Waskatenau on Saturday afternoon at about 2:50.

Smoky Lake RCMP and emergency crews were called to the single-vehicle crash near the Victoria Trail intersection. The initial investigation indicates the woman's motorcycle was northbound when it crashed into a guard rail along the roadway. Police say the woman was taken to the Smoky Lake hospital by EMS where she was pronounced dead.

The section of the road was restricted to traffic for several hours on Saturday afternoon. The road was opened to traffic Saturday night.  The name of the deceased woman will not be released.

This story has been updated to properly identify the location of the crash as being south of Waskatenau, not Smoky Lake.
