Seniors in the region now have a better way to keep informed of the changing COVID-19 regulations, and how it can affect them.

Lac La Biche County Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) Supervisor Anita Polturak, says that during regular “wellness calls” the organization conducts with seniors that are registered with their programs, it became more and more obvious that seniors were not always up to date on the changing restrictions.

In response, the municipal department has developed the Seniors’ COVID Helpline — 780-623-6745.

“It was identified to us that seniors may be having trouble keeping track of how the pandemic protocols may be shifting, or they were needing information on COVID testing,” said Polturak.

One of the reasons for seniors not being as knowledgeable about what is going on when it comes to the pandemic is due to many not knowing how to use the Internet or they don’t know where to go to get the information they need, says Polturak.

The helpline is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and it will assist seniors in learning how to check for quickly shifting mandates on Alberta Health Services website, how to book a COVID-19 test, and any other virus-related questions they may have.

“The purpose is to support seniors during these challenging times,” said Polturak.

FCSS also offers other hotlines available for anyone, of any age, just needing to talk. The number that is available during regular business hours is 780-520-8576. For anyone needing someone to talk to at any hour, their 24/7 hotline number is 1-866-727-4673.

“We will lend an ear and, if necessary, help people find resources they need.”
