LAC LA BICHE – No summer festival is the same without folks having the opportunity to enjoy a good old-fashioned ball tournament and that is exactly what organizers are promising during Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days.
According to Ali Fyith, a director with the Lac La Biche Pow Wow Days and Fish Derby Association, the tournament will run Aug. 2 to 4 at the Bold Centre ball diamonds and consist of both baseball and slo-pitch events.
For the baseball tournament there will be four to six teams in the AA division and organizers are hoping for three more teams in the 50-plus division as well.
“Teams will play a round robin with a single elimination playoff format should they advance,” he said.
Meanwhile, the slo-pitch tournament is anticipated to have 12-16 teams in a round robin, then possibly a double-knockout playoff format.
For many years the Lac La Biche Pow Wow event ran what Fyith calls a “very prestigious tournament,” with teams coming from near and far to compete on the local ball diamond. He added that organizers are planning to add something new to this year’s ball tournament, an event called a home run derby.
“My task has been to renew this tournament to its glory days,” Fyith said.
He said organizers are planning to add something new to the baseball portion of this year’s ball tournament, an event called a home run derby, which he said is exciting to watch.
During the home run derby, Fyith explained, select players from each team in the tournament will be able to enter, along with a limited number of members from the public.
The home run derby will consist of three rounds. Each player will receive a two-minute timeframe for every round played. According to Fyith, there will be. a 30-second rest between each minute to prepare for the second portion of the round.
The top three home run amounts hit from the first round will advance to the second round. The top two totals will then advance to the final round where a home run king will be crowned.
