Portage College seeking new Chair

Portage College is looking for a new Chair for the school's Board of Governors.

The position must be approved by the minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education.

Janice Schroeder, spokesperson for the Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education Thomas Lukaszuk, said the right candidate must have the wisdom to understand the community and its needs, a vision for the college's role in the community as well as experience in a senior leadership role so they can tackle any issue that arise.

The position became available in July when Brydon Ward stepped down after completing almost four years. He cited time commitments with family as the reason for his sudden departure.

Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education spokesperson Suzana Krpan says it's important for community members to get involved in education.

"Portage College plays a key role in the community and surrounding region,” said Krpan. "Participating on the board is an opportunity to guide the future of Portage College. By getting involved with the governance of the college, community members have an opportunity to ensure that their perspectives are considered and that the college meets the needs of the community.”

The Chair is responsible for hiring a president for the college and managing his/her performance, lobbying the minister on behalf of the college as well as approving plans and policies and submitting programs of study to the minister.

Schroeder explained that the Chair is also part of the Campus Alberta Strategic Direction Committee where chairs of post-secondary institutions across Alberta meet with the minister, network and share their expertise.

"They have an impact beyond the institution,” she said.

Interested candidates can apply online at jobs.alberta.ca. The deadline to apply is Sept. 16.
