LAC LA BICHE - It was a win-less home-and-away weekend for both the men's and women's Portage College Voyageur soccer teams.
The women were kept off the scoreboard in their 10-0 loss to the Concordia University Thunder on Saturday in Edmonton, and again in a 3-0 defeat to the Lakeland College Rustlers on Sunday at their Bold Center home turf.
The Portage men's team dropped their game with Concordia 4-1, and came out on the losing end of a closer game in front of a small home crowd on Sunday in a 3-2 decision for the Rustlers.
The men's Sunday game was a back-and-forth show, with the Rustlers' Nathan Tran breaking a 2-2 tie at the 80-minute mark with the game-winner, his second of the game. The other Lakeland College goal-scorer was Hani Tekheste. The Voyageurs' goal-scorers were Yves Mwenedata and Dominic Douglas.
In the standings
The weekend losses for the Voyaguers', the third straight defeats for the men and four-straight for the women have dropped both teams down the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) North Division standings.
The weekend soccer games also saw the arrival of new faces behind the Portage players' bench. Coach Al Bertschi and assistant coach Al Robertson have taken over coaching duties on both Portage teams from long-time bench bosses Kika Mukuninwa and Glenda Bouvier.
Going into last weekend, where both teams were facing the NAIT Ooks, the women's squad was in sixth-place of the seven-team league. The Portage men were in fifth place of their seven-team league.
The Voyageurs' next home game soccer match is against Keyano on Oct. 6. The women's game starts at 5 p.m. The Portage squad is in Edmonton on Oct. 7 for games against The Kings University.
