RCMP arrest man in connection with Pelican Hotel robbery

Lac La Biche RCMP have arrested and charged a Kikino man in connection to a recent robbery at the Plamondon Hotel at the end of last month.

Lac La Biche RCMP have arrested and charged a Kikino man in connection to a recent robbery at the Plamondon Hotel at the end of last month.

Last Friday afternoon, RCMP released a statement saying 18 year old Aaron Steinhauer of Kikino has been charged with seven Criminal Code charges including robbery with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, and being disguised with intent to commit an offense.

The charges stem from a Feb. 29 report of an afternoon robbery at the Pelican Hotel’s liquor store.

The suspect will be in Lac La Biche Provincial Court on April 20 for his first appearance in relation to the charges.

More charges

Police say that their investigation has also resulted in additional charges against the suspect relating to two other investigations. RCMP say Steinhauer is also facing charges of break and enter to a business, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000.

Steinhauer was released from custody pending his court date.

Robbery last year

The Plamondon Hotel was the scene of an armed robbery in August of 2019 when masked men armed with firearms robbed the business’s tavern. No arrests have been made in that crime.

Witnesses to the recent robbery say they saw a black vehicle speeding from the downtown Plamondon business at the time of the reported robbery. One POST reader sent the newspaper video footage of police arresting three young suspects on Highway 855 near Buffalo Lake shortly after the robbery. Witnesses say a black car had crashed into the ditch prior to police making the arrests.

The POST has requested more details on the reported Pelican robbery and information on the other two investigations that police say are related.
