RCMP continue search for man south of Plamondon

RCMP evacuate homes and tell residents to avoid the area

Lac La Biche RCMP have just issued a news release notifying area residents of an ongoing search for a man wanted for fleeing from police Tuesday night. The search has included the evacuation of several residences south of Plamondon near Caslan.

In this morning's press release to media, RCMP say they have evacuated residents in the area of Range Road 162 and Township Road 670 south of Plamondon in a rural area last night, as the man is considered to be armed and dangerous. Police have been using the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Air Services and local detachments in the search for the suspect, who they have identified as Darren Larose of Caslan.

The 35-year-old is described as Indigenous, five-foot-11 inches, with black braided hair, brown eyes, and a tattoo under his right eye. Police are saying Larose ran from police after a vehicle pursuit in the Caslan area last night.  At the time he  was wearing dark pants and a sweater. Other occupants were in the vehicle and were held by police, but further details on the involvement of others is not being released by RCMP.

Police are treating the incident as serious matter with concern for public and police safety.

Hitchhiking concern

"Citizens are asked to avoid the area and contact Lac La Biche RCMP at 780-404-2500 if they see anything suspicious or anyone hitch hiking in the area near Highway 55," says RCMP media relations Cpl. Ron Bumbry.

This morning's news release says RCMP will provide an update as more information becomes available. A short notice was posted to the RCMP's Twitter site at 10:30 last night about the search — but was not followed with an immediate release to media, and didn't get a lot of social media attention.

Social media silence in area

As an added precaution for public safety, Bumbry is asking that people in the specific area of the police search do not post information or images about ongoing events to social media channels "as a matter of police safety."
