Recent wins follow Voyoageurs into final games of ACAC season

Voyageurs out of playoffs, but final season games come on the heels of recent wins

On Friday and Saturday, the Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team repeated a pattern that has taken place over the past two weekends.

Friday’s game on home ice against the visiting Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder resulted in a 6-2 victory for the Voyageurs. The following day in Edmonton, the Thunder turned the tables on Portage College, handing them a 4-2 loss.

The Feb. 2 weekend saw the Voyageurs secure a 7-2 win in the first of a two-game away contest against the SAIT Trojans, who won the second game 4-3.

The weekend before, the Voyageurs enjoyed a 4-3 win in overtime to the NAIT OOKs at the Bold Centre, but dropped a 4-1 decision to NAIT on the road the next day.

The Voyageurs dominated the scoreboard at home on Friday, with Xavier Halterman, assisted by Chris Black and Logan Carruthers, scoring the first goal. Before the first period had ended, Leighton Desjarlais scored the team’s second goal.

Portage College went into second period with a 2-1 lead over the Thunder, who remained off the scoreboard until the third period. Mikal Chalifoux scored two back-to-back goals in the second while Carter Yarish had his first goal of the evening.

By the time third period rolled around, the Voyageurs had a commanding 4-1 lead. While CUE’s Isaac Leik managed to get another goal for his team, that was quickly matched by Desjarlais who, halfway through the period, scored his second goal and the team’s sixth of the game.

Unfortunately, Portage College was unable to keep this momentum going and dropped a 4-2 decision to CUE in Edmonton on Saturday. Karsten Gorrill and Carter Yarish scored the team’s goals in that game.

Final games of the regular season

The Voyageurs, who remain at the bottom of their seven-team Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), will be playing their final regular season games this upcoming weekend. Only the top six teams in the league go onto playoffs.

The Voyageurs will be travelling to Camrose on Friday, Feb. 23 to take on the Augustana Vikings. Both teams will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Bold Centre.  That game will be the last home game of the regular season for the Voyageurs.
