LAC LA BICHE – From June 3 to 6, several artistically-inclined residents of Lacalta Lodge had their work on display for their fellow residents and members of the public to view during a special art and craft expo held during Seniors’ Week.
Those who stopped by the seniors’ residence for the afternoon expo had the opportunity to see a variety of paintings, crocheted blankets, drawn art, bead art, as well as floral arrangements and homemade clothing.
Mae Gargar, the activity coordinator for Lacalta Lodge, said the exhibit is a chance for residents to showcase their abilities and the pieces of art they’ve been working on.
“We actually have a lot of talented people here,” Gargar said.
Having activities such as the art and craft expo for local senior citizens during Seniors Week helps to get senior involved and also gives them a sense of accomplishment.
“It makes them feel important. It makes them proud,” she said.
A couple of the residents of Lacalta Lodge who had their work on display at the event were Leya Plamondon and Anne Lemay.
Plamondon sewed together an old-fashioned red and black dress for the expo, while Lemay had a few paintings on display.
For Plamondon, who has been sewing for more than six decades, it took about a months to make the dress.
“I was kind of fixing things in between for other people,” she said.
Lemay, who has been doing artwork for about 20 years, was proud to have her watercolour paintings showcased at the art expo. The paintings depicted different scenes, including a little girl, and a winter nature scene.
Painting, according to Lemay, is a relaxing, and a good way of keeping busy.
“When I did the little girl, I was up until after midnight,” she explained.
