Rustic sign gives unique look to downtown Lac La Biche

The sign, which gives people directions to local landmarks, is part of a series of signs that will be located around downtown Lac La Biche, as well as outside of the downtown.

LAC LA BICHE - People who are walking around downtown Lac La Biche these days may very well notice the new signage and other features that have been put in place as part of the ongoing $32.5 million Main Street Revitalization project.

One sign located near the corner of 101 Avenue (Main Street) and 102 Street, with its brownish rusty, rustic colour scheme, stands out.

Using large, white arrows, the sign points visitors in the direction of local destinations such as Portage College, the William J. Cadzow Hospital, and the boat launch.

According to Ali Memon, Lac La Biche County’s general manager of infrastructure, members of council decided on the sign just prior to the start of the Main Street makeover.

“The rustic look was approved by council at the outset of the project, to help give the downtown area a unique look,” Memon said.

Memon explained that there is a network of these signs that will be installed in the future. The contractor, he added, is starting to put them up.

A handful of signs will also be located on the outskirts of the community.

“There will be a few signs outside of downtown, to help complete people’s journeys to each of the destinations like the college, the hospital, the Bold Centre and elsewhere,” Memon said.

Wayfinding signage is essential to help people find their way around the community.

“The colour scheme will help people who are less familiar with our community to find key destinations, and the signs are designed to stand out from other signage in order to be unique to the hamlet’s downtown core,” he said.
