In the week since the provincial election, many local residents have voiced concerns over Wildrose MLA–elect Shayne Saskiw’s representation as a member of the official opposition, despite a very large Conservative majority. Some believe he will have a difficult time securing the funding and provincial support that previous MLA Ray Danyluk promised to the residents of Lac La Biche.
Saskiw is doing his best to quell those fears, especially those regarding the promised funds for the new high school at the Bold Center, the dialysis unit, and the funding provided by the Air Weapons Range.
“The best thing about the Wildrose party is that we do not have to toe the party line, meaning that I can listen to the voices and concerns of my constituents – this allows me a real opportunity to fight for the needs in this community,” he said, adding he will do all he can to continue the progress and promises made by his predecessor.
“The promises made by the Conservatives regarding the high school and dialysis unit are valid ones, I know these two concerns affect a large number for people here in Lac La Biche, and I can promise I will fight to get every dollar that was promised by the Conservative government for those projects.”
Saskiw also added that his platform would address healthcare issues at the W.J. Cadzow hospital in Lac La Biche.
Saskiw was also asked about his feelings on working with a community that has a mayor who was a strong Danyluk supporter, and a councillor who was a direct opponent in the recent election.
Based on these facts, some believe that this is a very politically volatile situation for a new opposition MLA to step into. Saskiw again deflected any concern surrounding the situation, willing to work with all members of the local council.
“I will fight for all of my constituents,” he said. “I don’t believe the local political situation will be difficult. I believe I can work well with everyone in council.”
Saskiw also added that the hard work and dedication put into his campaign shows how committed he is to working with individuals in Lac La Biche.
“We worked exceptionally hard in this campaign across the entire constituency,” Saskiw said. “We know we have the support of people here, and the reason we have this support is because we were listening. We are standing up for the issues that people are concerned about.”
