Local resident Sonya King raised an astonishing $4,070 for the 8th annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake charity event this past weekend in Lac La Biche.
Spending countless hours in the community with her pledge forms over the last several weeks, and at events like the Kinsmen Pond Hockey Tournament, King smashed her previous totals of $1,770 in 2010, and $2,775 in 2011.
“I really like talking to people, I had a goal in mind and I just wanted to get out there and raise money,” said King, who bowled for the Lac La Biche Disability Service team throughout the weekend.
Her original goal for this year was $3,000. When asked how she managed to gain such support, King replied: “I have the time and the interest to do this, I’d much rather be out in the community than sitting at home.”
She has gained the support of the community and has turned more than a few heads with her persistence in raising such a large amount year after year.
“We are so happy to have Sonya’s support, she works so hard to campaign for our cause, year after year, and we are so proud to have her bowl at our event,” said Kristin White of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Lac La Biche chapter.
King, along with her team of four, bowled in the fun tournament at the Lucky Strike Bowling Alley on March 10, to raise $16,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters in Lac La Biche. King’s contributions will certainly help reach that goal. And she is no stranger to bowling: she has faithfully gone every Monday night to bowl at the local lanes. This is her third year participating in the Bowl for Kids Sake weekend.
“It’s really nice that there is an event that combines my favourite things, I love the fresh air of getting pledges, and I love to bowl,” said King.
The event also had a competition for local business teams, which ran on Friday March 9 from 6pm-9pm.
“She certainly sets an example for the rest of us,” said Catherine Carlson, King’s support worker with Lac La Biche Disability Services.
