With the help of some great features on his Olympus EM10 Mark II camera, Atmore area resident and hobby photographer Andron Frolov snapped some fantastic flashes of lightning during an early morning storm today.
A plumber by trade, Frolov knows a thing or two about running water. And when he heard the storm rolling in this morning, he was ready for a summer downpour. He wasn't expecting to need one of his trusty cameras, however, so the idea of recording the storm didn't flash into his mind until a flash seemed to shake his house.
"I saw an instantaneous flash of light and then thunder. I thought it hit my house," he said. " I watched it for a few minutes, then thought I'd better get some photos. It was something."
The striking photos
Setting up his trusty Olympus — his go-to camera — he left the shutter open for a five minute burst. The specially designed feature of the camera and lens records any changes to the light in the focal area and "stacks" the photos, kind of like a time-lapse effect.
Frolov knew where to point the camera, as the lightning and dark clouds passed over his home and headed east towards Plamondon and Lac La Biche.
"At first it looked like it was a quarter mile away, then I'd say the lightning was south of the Four Corners," he said.
Several of the composite photos show upwards of a dozen lightning bolts in the frame over a five minute period.
Frolov sent several of the photos to the POST. He has more at his Instagram page @andronikfr

Frolov said he enjoys taking weather shots. He may have more today, as Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Lac La Biche, Plamondon, Bufffalo Lake, Kikino and Wandering River area later this afternoon as another storm cell passed through the region.
