Suspect in Boyle-area campsite stabbing spotted along highway

Police nab runaway suspect in attempted murder investigation 20 hours later and 100 kilometres away

Police traveling back to Edmonton the day after an over-night investigation into the stabbing of a woman at a Boyle-area campsite, arrested a suspect as he walked along a stretch of highway about 100 kilometres from the scene.

Boyle RCMP say the woman was transferred to an Edmonton hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. Witnesses say a male suspect ran into the surrounding wooded area after the attack. The campsite is located approximately 160 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

RCMP from Edmonton and the Boyle area — including an RCMP police dog unit and the Edmonton Police Services Air-1 helicopter —  responded to the call, but the suspect was not immediately located. More than 20 hours later, as two members of the Forensic Identification Services team returned to their Edmonton base on Sunday afternoon, they spotted a man matching the description of the suspect walking along Highway 28 near Redwater, about 60 kilometres north of Edmonton.

The Redwater RCMP along with Redwater Integrated Traffic Unit assisted with the arrest of the suspect male. He was taken into custody without incident.

Ethan Cooper, 32, of Edmonton has been charged with attempted murder. He was remanded into custody following a judicial hearing, and is set to appear in Boyle Provincial Court on Sept. 8, 2020.

RCMP are not seeking any other suspects in relation to this incident and do not believe this was a random act.
