Voyageurs Golf Classic set to return for third year

The event, which has taken place for the past three years at the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club, is put on to raise money for Portage College sports teams.

LAC LA BICHE - On Aug. 21, recreational golfers from the Lac La Biche area and beyond will be hitting the links of the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club in support of Portage College athletics programs during the third annual Voyageurs Golf Classic.

According to Jim Knight, the manager of athletics and recreation for Portage College, due to ongoing construction on the greens, which includes work on the entire front nine, this year’s tournament will feature a couple of different formats.

“We will be playing 18 holes, but the first nine will be played on the preferred tee boxes and it’s a best ball format,” Knight said. The second nine holes will be played from the 150-yard markers as Par 3s.

“We will be paying out nine Closest-to-the-Pin prizes for these nine holes.”

Organizers of the 2025 Voyageurs Golf Classic, Knight continued, are hoping to have 72 golfers participating, as that is the maximum they can have for this year’s tournament. College staff and student athletes, he explained, will be running contests on each of the nine holes during the day.

“They will be either at the green or the tee boxes.”

The Voyageurs Golf Classic raises about $9,000 annually, since its inception in 2023. The money that is raised from the sporting event helps support the Portage College Athletic Association (PCAA).

The tournament also helps to raise the profile of the college and its athletes.

“This is a great awareness piece for our sports teams, the athletes and the PCAA and their role,” Knight stated. “People attending get to see where our athletes come from as people in our community probably don’t realize that we are recruiting from across Canada and internationally.”

According to information from Portage College, the 2025 edition of the Voyageurs Golf Classic gets underway on the morning of Aug. 21. The cost to enter the tournament is $180 for individuals and $700 for a team of four.
