Voyageurs have just four games to break the season's winless streak

Both of the Portage Voyageurs weekend games against Red Deer College were disappointingly close for our local team. People were on the edge of their seats thinking this could finally be the moment when the Voyageurs pull a win.

The Voyageurs were in Red Deer over the weekend, but lost both games. They are back on home ice Friday to faceoff with the MacEwan Griffins.

Both of the Portage Voyageurs weekend away games against Red Deer College were disappointingly close for the local team — with one game against the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference number-two team needing overtime to determine a winner — and despite the single point for that game, the Voyageurs' season-long winless streak is continuing.

Friday night's game against Red Deer started off strong with Portage scoring two goals in the first period to Red Deer’s one. The Voyageurs were still up by one in the second period, but fell away in the third with Red Deer taking the game 5-3.

Saturday night's game had a similar theme, as the Voyageurs were leading the game through two periods, but saw the lead crumble as the clock ticked down in the final frame. This time around, the Voyageurs and Red Deer were all tied up at six apiece at the end of regulation play. But just three and a half minutes into the first overtime period, Red Deer scored the winner. The overtime loss did win the Voyageurs a single point in the league standings, bringing their point total to 2.  It was the second overtime loss in the team's 24 games so far this season.

With only four more games left in the regular season, the Voyageurs will continue their attempt to break the 24 game losing streak. Their next game will be at home on Friday 21, at the Bold Centre against MacEwan University Griffins. The home-and-home weekend sees the Voyageurs travel to Edmonton on Saturday. The Griffins are currently in third place in the ACAC, just one point behind Red Deer and seven back of first place NAIT.

The Voyageurs final games of the regular season will be on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, February 29. Both games are against Augustana. Friday's game is at the Bold Center and the team's final regular season game will be on the road.

Augustana is currenlty in fifth place in the league with a record of 10 wins and 13 losses, 20 points back from Nait and 19 up on the last place Voyageurs.

Only the top six teams of the eight-team ACAC will go onto the playoff round.
