The Portage College Voyageurs men’s hockey team are hoping to break their winless tailspin this weekend with home and away games against the NAIT OOKS.
The upcoming games are on the heels of two losses last weekend to the visiting SAIT Trojans. Although last Friday’s game against the Trojans took two OT periods to determine the winner, Saturday’s 7-1 loss was the sixth straight winless result for Portage.
Friday’s game at the Bold Center had the home team up 3-0 through the first two periods, but SAIT scored three unanswered goals in the third, forcing extra time.
Trojan forward Zach Cain, assisted by Kayden Smith, scored SAIT’s fourth goal in the second 10-minute period of overtime to give the Trojans a 4-3 victory.
Mikal Chalifoux, Shaye Sommerfeld, and Karsten Gorrill scored for the Voyageurs. In net, Portage goalie Alex Brousseau managed 46 saves during the game.
Saturday’s rematch was a considerably wider margin for the Voyageurs, who only managed to get onto the scoreboard once. Xavier Halterman —assisted by Nick Gidney and Shaye Sommerfeld — earned the team’s lone goal in a 7-1 loss to SAIT the following afternoon.
The Voyageurs have been relegated to last place in the seven-team Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, two points behind Concordia, and 15 points behind NAIT, who currently hold first place.
Remembrance Day home game
The games against the league-leading OOKs are Friday, Nov. 10 in Edmonton and at the Bold Center on Saturday, Nov. 11. Saturday’s home game for the Voyageurs starts at 3:30 pm.
