Nominations are needed — now.

The entry process for the 2021 Junior Citizen of the Year nominations for Lac La Biche County is moving along slowly — but the deadline is coming up quickly.

Area residents have only to 9 a.m on Monday, November 22 to enter their selection — and a brief bio of a deserving young person — for the award handed out during the Christmas Light Up The Night event.

The Light Up the Night event — taking place this year on Friday, November 26 — will feature an evening Santa parade along Lac La Biche's Main Street, downtown retail shopping deals, the lighting of the giant downtown Christmas tree, and the announcement for Junior Citizen of the Year.

Since 2016, junior citizens have included Sara Adil, Leagan Ponicappo, Tia Guinand, Chenoa Kaufman and last year's recipient, Cordelia Lyons.

In past years, the junior citizen of the year flicks the switch to light a 35-40 foot tree.

Forms to nominate a young community member for their outstanding community service can be found HERE

The deadline for entries is Monday, November 22 at 9am.

COVID planning

Organizers of this year's Light Up the Night say they are being compliant with all current pandemic measures and restrictions. Because of those restrictions, however, some events like the hot chocolate booth, popcorn tables and sitting on Santa's lap will likely have to be revised. Other events will be encouraging social distancing measures. Even with the COVID-caused changes, members of the volunteer community board organizing the event are pleased to be able to at least do something to bring some light-hearted fun. Last year, severe pandemic regulations that restricted  the number of people at outdoor gatherings, forced the outright cancellation of the main events of the night.

Entry forms for residents, groups and businesses to join the Light Up the Night Santa Parade can be found at the event's social media page.

The Light Up the Night parade is slated to roll down Main Street starting at 6:30 pm. The big tree will be lit following the parade.

The Light Up event is running in conjunction with downtown businesses and the Festival Of Trees holiday fundraiser at the Bold Center.
