Aurora Middle School is one of five Alberta schools to get $50,000 grant

Unique funding from Alberta Blue Cross will be used for outdoor fitness and well-being

LAC LA BICHE - Staff and students at Lac La Biche's Aurora Middle School will benefit from a $50,000 grant recently received from the Alberta Blue Cross Built Together program. The funding will go towards plans for a new outdoor classroom and basketball court near the school's domed garden classroom.

Carolina Franke, the principal at  Aurora, said the project was identified by staff, students and parents of the school's council  as something to benefit students and the community as a whole. Franke says the classroom and all-weather sports court will be an add-on to existing outdoor features used by community members and students.

“Our playground and frisbee golf course are already used by many families in our community and this will provide an additional way for them to stay active,” she said.

Nicole Garner, the communications and public relations manager for Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS), said the current timeline to begin construction on the project is the coming spring, with finishing touches such as picnic benches, garbage cans, and other enhancements done over the summer months.

Additional funding may be required to fully complete the project, but the grant money will go a long way to making it happen.

Alberta Blue Cross awards five Built Together $50,000 grants each year - one in Edmonton, one in Calgary, one in a secondary city, one in a rural community, and one in an Indigenous community. Aurora was the recipient of the rural community grant this year.
