Another marina to be installed on Lac Sante

A second request within about six months for a marina to be installed at Lac Sante has been brought forward to County of St. Paul council.

ST. PAUL - Another group of residents from Lac Sante is requesting permission for use of a road allowance to access Lac Sante, where a marina will be created for about eight lot owners.

Brian Riehl of the Labrecque Backlot Marina Association spoke to council on Oct. 12 regarding the installation of a marina at the end of Range Road 111 on the east side of Lac Sante. The association has been created due to Alberta Environment stating the backlot owners can no longer place a dock in the water that is adjacent to Crown Land, according to information presented at the council meeting.

Alberta Environment presented the marina as an option to consider if they want to continue to have a dock on the lake.

Council approved a similar request on the west side of Lac Sante on Range Road 113 in April of this year.

The Sante Estates marina is positioned at the end of the Rand Road 113 road allowance, and is used by the non-lakefront residents. The earlier request sought approval to have a 12-foot gangplank on the undeveloped road allowance during the summer months for access to the new marina and permission to store the marina sections on the undeveloped road allowance during the winter months.

When speaking to the more recent request, administration stated that "Should council consider approval of this request, administration would recommend that the association be required to enter into a memorandum of agreement taking responsibility for the structures on the undeveloped road allowance year-round."

Riehl explained that 10 of the backlot owners were found to have been "trespassing" on Crown land, and eight of those owners have decided to get together to create the new marina. No improvements are required along Range Road 111, since the road allowance is passable by foot or ATV, and other vehicle access is not required.

He noted those involved do use the boat launch located on the other side of the lake, so no further access to the lake is required. But, storage of the marina in the winter would be required along both side of the road allowance.

Insurance will cover the marina when it is both in and out of the water, explained Riehl.

CAO Sheila Kitz noted the request was very similar to the one previously approved by council in the spring.
