Area schools to benefit from increased capital funding

LAKELAND - Schools will benefit from the Government of Alberta's plan to boost the economy and get people working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, the province announced capital funding for school divisions has been increased by $250 million. The funds will "help boost the economy, while also accelerating important maintenance to existing schools," according to the provincial government. "This funding will support hundreds of projects in all school divisions across the province. The work will create about 3,750 jobs and see more Albertans working again sooner."

During the May 20 St. Paul Education Regional Division board meeting, it was noted that the division has three fairly big roofing projects that need to get done, along with some mechanical and lighting projects.

Board Chair Heather Starosielski said the increased funding allows the division to work on the projects while schools are fairly vacant.

"We're definitely going to have a busy summer," said Starosielski.

The Conseil scolaire Centre-Est will also be receiving additional funding through this initiative.

"Our project includes refurbishing the roof on École Beauséjour (Plamondon), as well as some work to the outside envelope of the school and replacing lighting  with some that are more energy efficient," said Superintendent Dolorese Nolette.

The provincial government says it will work with school divisions to invest dollars in the most efficient and effective ways possible.

"Specific projects will be confirmed by the start of June. The majority of projects are anticipated to be completed by October," according to the province.

Approved projects must align with the requirements of Alberta Education’s Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal (IMR) program. Projects can include work to the building envelope of a school, mechanical work, electrical work, structural work, interior work, and site improvements.
